AI and the Human Condition

July 2, 2019 by

How can we live well and create a flourishing society? And what role does technology play? Those are the questions that Nick Bostrom is addressing in this 40-minute talk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xwESiI6uKA

Thanks to AI we are at the threshold of the third technological revolution that is fundamentally changing the human condition. The first was the agricultural revolution 12,000 years ago that enabled humans to settle down. The second was the industrial revolution, after which global economies started to soar. AI is the third. It will scale up the brain, much more than the transition from the big apes to the human species, and far beyond the limits in speed or capacity of biological tissue.

Humans can still do some things much better than machines and it will take a while before machines reach the level of human intelligence, Bostrom says. Once that happens, then superintelligence might be just around the corner. Because of that we need to think hard about how AI can contribute to the human condition. After all: How can you control something that is smarter than you are?

Nick Bostrom will be a keynote speaker at the ELP Annual Leadership Conference 2019, see http://www.leadershipconference.eu/.
