Somewheres and Anywheres

January 9, 2018 by

The division between ‘somewheres’ and ‘anywheres’ is one of the new divisions that set different groups of people in society apart. British journalist David Goodhart coins these terms in his book The Road to Somewhere: The Populist Revolt and the Future of Politics (2017). ‘People from somewhere’ are rooted, socially conservative and suspicious of the constant churn. By contrast, ‘people from anywhere’ are cosmopolitan, socially liberal, internationalist and comfortable with change. Obviously, most business leaders fit into the latter category.

This division partly overlaps with, partly comes on top of other divisions, such as differences in income and wealth, digital literates and illiterates, well and less educated, religious and secular, etc.

Being different is not a problem as such. On the contrary, diversity makes the world a better place. It only becomes a problem if different groups live inside their own bubble and don’t understand and empathize with each other. Helpful are an open heart, an open mind and a willingness to engage into a dialogue.
